MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – “Fearless commander, strong-willed manager who has earned great respect of fellow partisans,” reads the commendation list of brigade commander Liventsev who was nominated for the Hero of the Soviet Union title. Viktor Liventsev was just 26 years old back then. At 25, he took charge of Bobruisk Partisan Brigade No.1 that operated in Bobruisk District and Osipovichi District of Mogilev Oblast and Parichi District of Polesie Oblast.
On 20 November 1943 the brigade merged with the Red Army. Led by Liventsev the brigade derailed 26 enemy trains, destroyed 17 steam trains, 278 wagons, 154 vehicles and annihilated 3 enemy garrisons.
After Minsk was liberated, Viktor Liventsev settled there. For twenty years he led the Committee on Physical Education and Sport under the Council of Ministers of the BSSR. This period is called ‘the Liventsev era'. “Partisan Chronicles: Giant of a Man. Hero of the Soviet Union Viktor Liventsev” is a new page of the joint project of BelTA and the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War History. It is dedicated to the legendary colonel Viktor Liventsev.
The project is based on a unique collection of handwritten partisan journals provided by the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War History. The collection was assigned the status of historical and cultural value of international importance (Class 1).
Every week BelTA brings these chronicles to light and posts their digital copies. Each of them sheds light on various aspects of partisans' life, gives a glimpse into thoughts and feelings of people who risked their lives to fight a battle behind enemy lines.
