"On Point"
MINSK, 7 June (BelTA) – Ukraine is simply being used as a shield, Editor-in-Chief of the Words and Meanings almanac Elena Kondratieva-Salguero (France) said in a recent episode of BelTA’s project “V teme” [On Point] while commenting on the position of European Union countries regarding the Ukraine conflict.
The expert noted that the situation surrounding the disturbances following a soccer match in Hungary is broadly typical of France as well. “Mainstream media continue to portray it as a public celebration with some isolated excesses. That is one aspect. In addition, there have been somewhat unexpected statements, for instance from the Minister of the Armed Forces, that France must be prepared for a shock at any moment. The nature of this shock is not specified,” she said.
“There are analytical efforts by fairly serious analysts examining the various moves of EU countries, including France. This refers to bellicose declarations [of representatives of these countries] that they will not tolerate certain actions, will not allow them, will assemble and deploy troops, and so forth. All of this serves to divert attention from the fact that, at present, Ukraine is simply being used as a shield. [EU representatives] claim that they must and will support Ukraine until victory, whatever that may entail. It has long been evident that such statements are entirely unsubstantiated, including the promised tranches and other forms of assistance,” the editor-in-chief emphasized.
