Opinion: EU countries will fail to build full-fledged pan-European army

MINSK, 14 April (BelTA) – The EU countries will not be able to create full-fledged pan-European armed forces, historian Yevgeny Spitsyn said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
“European politicians act like they are playing war and using war toys. Even Helmut Schmidt [Chancellor of West Germany in 1974-1982] was smart enough to understand what a nuclear threat is; he knew that one push of a nuclear button can destroy an entire state and kill millions of people,” Yevgeny Spitsyn said.

The historian noted that today's leaders of European countries do not understand this, so they continue to escalate the military and political situation. “They are pushing Zelensky and his entire gang to press ahead with military operations until victory. Until what kind of victory? Are you out of your mind? He has essentially run out of mobilization resources. And he doesn't have a domestic defense industry or energy sector,” he added.

According to Yevgeny Spitsyn, entire generations of Europeans have grown relaxed during the post-war period. “Here is a historical example. Do you know why France surrendered to Hitler within a little over a month? Because the French had lost a huge number of people, including young men, during the First World War. For France, it was a kind of Rubicon. Even the physique - muscle mass, strength, and so on - of French men was significantly inferior to pre-war generations of the French. The cream of the nation was destroyed. And the French had absolutely no desire to defend their country,” the expert said.

According to the historian, today's French or Germans do not rush to fight. “Will they be forced to fight, as in Ukraine? The Ukrainians tolerate this coercion and this lawlessness. And the Europeans - I'll bet my head on it - are used to living in their so-called democracy and will not tolerate this. So the bottom-line is: they will not be able to put together a full-fledged pan-European army,” Yevgeny Spitsyn concluded.
