MINSK, 14 December (BelTA) – Belarusians must prioritize their nation’s development over preoccupation with foreign affairs, member of the Minsk City Council of Deputies Vadim Borovik told BelTA.

Commenting on the pardon of 123 citizens of various countries who had been convicted of various crimes in Belarus, the deputy noted that the decision was made by the country’s leadership primarily on humanitarian grounds, and in response to appeals from the prisoners themselves, their families and loved ones.

He added that the move was also prompted by Belarus’ desire to normalize relations not only with the United States – with whom constructive talks are currently underway on a range of bilateral and international issues, including a peaceful settlement in Ukraine – but also to establish constructive dialogue with its European neighbors.

Thus, the second aspect of the decision is pragmatic, noted Vadim Borovik. He recalled that U.S. sanctions were previously lifted on Belavia and this time  on Belaruskali. This process will continue, he said, citing U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus John Coale.

“We expect all illegal sanctions to be lifted,” stated the deputy. “At the same time, this sends a signal to the European Union: when Washington demonstrates a constructive approach, perhaps Lithuania should consider loading its ports, stop closing borders, and halt its baseless attacks against us. The same applies to Poland.”

Regarding the self-exiled opposition, Vadim Borovik noted that there is fierce competition among them, often leading to conflict. This trend was confirmed by the recent release of one of the prisoners. He believes that the current mass release could heighten tensions among this group, where competition for financial resources is already evident.

The deputy did not rule out the possibility that some of those released who went abroad could be recruited to serve interests not aligned with Belarus’ national interests. “I would like the pardoned individuals to understand: they should be with their people, and not be involved in political projects in third countries meant against their compatriots,” he remarked.

Vadim Borovik expressed confidence that Belarusians should pay less attention to noise abroad and concentrate on the country’s development, normalizing relations with partners, and seeking the lifting of all illegal sanctions from both the U.S. and Europe. “Our task is to ensure the most intensive growth of our economy, the highest possible standard of living for our population, security, and normal interaction with all countries of the world,” he concluded.
