MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) – A new European bison population is being created in the Cherikov Forestry, Mogilev Oblast. In BelTA’s The Nation Speaks project, Aleksandr Kozorez, Head of the Hunting Department at the Forestry Ministry, explained why this particular location was chosen.
Between 2021 and 2025, groundwork was laid for bison relocation – partly because their numbers have significantly increased. Today, Belarus is home to over 3,000 bison.
“Bison live in large, localized, and densely populated herds – such as the Belovezhskaya and Osipovichi populations, each already exceeding 700 individuals. These are quite conservative animals that spread very slowly and tend to cluster in small areas, which creates problems, including for agriculture. That’s why they need to be relocated. This five-year plan has already set the foundation for this – such as establishing a new bison population in the Cherikov Forestry,” said Aleksandr Kozorez.

Cherikov District was not chosen at random. The area has many lands affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster – abandoned, unused lands overgrown with weeds.
