Neighboring EU countries held responsible for long truck queues at Belarusian border

MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – The State Border Committee of Belarus has responded to accusations that claim that Belarus is responsible for the congestion of semi-trailer trucks at the country's border with the European Union, BelTA has learned.

Internet sources blame Belarus for the large number of semi-trailer trucks, which are queuing on the Belarusian side of the border in order to enter countries of the European Union. “However, the sources forget to mention that it takes two sides to handle cross-border traffic,” the Belarusian border service noted.

Trucks can leave Belarus only if the other side lets them enter its territory, the State Border Committee stressed.

For instance, in the last 24 hours the Polish side cleared only 64% of the standard number of incoming vehicles. Personnel of the Polish border crossings simply did not allow the other 36% of the semi-trailer trucks, which were supposed to cross the border in line with bilateral agreements within these 24 hours, to enter Poland. The largest traffic jam is located near the Polish border crossing Kukuryki (Kozlovichi on the Belarusian side).

Lithuania cleared 75% of the number of trucks it can process. The largest traffic jam can be found on the road going through the border crossing Salcininkai (Benyakoni on the Belarusian side).

Latvia honored the bilateral agreements on traffic clearance in full. As of 10:00 the largest number of semi-trailer trucks could be found on the road going through the border checkpoint Silene (Urbany on the Belarusian side).
