MINSK, 28 October (BelTA) – Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda considers closing Lithuania’s territory to Belarusian goods bound for Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast, TASS reports.

Gitanas Nausėda told reporters that banning transit through Lithuania is a serious instrument of pressure. He clarified that the measure would target “products manufactured in Belarus, not Russian cargo destined for Kaliningrad Oblast”.

The Lithuanian president also examines the possibility of expanding sanctions against Belarus. He noted that while “EU restrictions apply to potash fertilizers, this does not apply to nitrogen fertilizers.”

Lithuania has been one of the most vocal advocates for Western sanctions targeting the Belarusian potash industry and previously spearheaded the complete halt of Belarusian cargo transit, specifically for potash fertilizers.

After a meeting of Lithuania’s National Security Commission on 27 October, plans were announced to indefinitely close the border with Belarus. While the final approval of the decision is expected from the Lithuanian government on 29 October, the proposed restrictions would not apply to diplomats, diplomatic mail, or Lithuanian and EU citizens entering from Belarus. Transit to and from Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast would also remain unaffected. All other cross-border traffic would be prohibited.
