MINSK, 16 June (BelTA) – An integrated resource, the Belarusian Electronic Encyclopedia, will soon be presented by the National Library of Belarus, said Director General of the National Library of Belarus and MP Vadim Gigin, BelTA has learned.
“In the near future, we expect to complete the integration of our project, which already contains about 30,000 factographic entries, with the work carried out by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus,” Vadim Gigin said. He was referring to the Belarusian Encyclopedia website maintained by the Yakub Kolas Central Scientific Library. Under a gratuitous transfer agreement, approximately 4,000 entries were transferred to the National Library of Belarus. The integration effort will result in the launch of the Belarusian Electronic Encyclopedia.
According to Vadim Gigin, the strategic goal of the project is to create a single platform containing verified information about the country’s history and contemporary life, offering a reliable alternative to external information sources.“The project is intended to ensure that our users, schoolchildren, students and teachers, have access to verified and reliable information about the key events related to Belarus’ history, culture and politics,” he said.
Vadim Gigin noted that efforts to implement a unified historical policy would have limited effect if users continued to receive distorted information from external electronic resources hosted outside Belarus. “We have no influence over how such information is interpreted. However, creating an alternative source is within our capabilities. This work is underway,” Vadim Gigin emphasized.
He also announced that as a result of the research work, it is proposed to establish a unified center for access to electronic information resources. The center is proposed to be based at the National Library of Belarus. Such a center, as envisaged, would enable a unified state policy toward resources procured by academic, research, and cultural institutions.
