National costume dolls on display at Belarusian State University


MINSK, 6 March (BelTA) – An official opening of a doll exhibition, Women of the World in National Costumes, took place at the Department of Philology at Belarusian State University on 5 March. The main idea of the exposition is to demonstrate cooperation and friendship between the nations through women’s beauty and, of course, national costumes, Professor of the Faculty of Belarusian Literature and Culture of the Department of Philology of Belarusian State University Irina Kazakova told BelTA.

The display features exhibits from private collections of the academic staff of the department as well as toys made by students. The works of students comprise Slavonic dolls (of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine).

The center of the exposition is occupied by the dolls in Belarusian national costumes. The right half of the hall has been allocated for the Mediterranean culture, the left – for dolls in the national costumes of the Eastern countries. Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, China, Japan, India, Nepal – it is just a part of the countries represented at the exhibition. The museum of the Department of Philology has displayed a total of 25 representatives of world cultures.

A highlight of the exhibition is “live dolls”, students from Turkmenistan, China and Nepal donning national costumes.

The visitors of the expo are also able to see a booth “Times of Year – Times of Life”. According to the organizers, it reflects the idea that a woman is beautiful at any age, the same as nature at any season.

Master-classes which make part of the exhibition invite to learn making dolls and painting in the traditional Turkish technique Ebru. Besides, the exhibition is featuring tatting works of Belarusian handy woman Yulia Terentyeva.

The exposition of dolls in national costumes is held every year, ahead of the International Women’s Day celebrations.
