Minsk, Moscow, St. Petersburg top Belarus-Russia rail routes

MINSK, 6 January (BelTA) – The most popular routes between Belarus and Russia include Minsk, Moscow, and St. Petersburg. These account for nearly three-quarters (72.2%) of direct railway passenger traffic. In January-September 2025, two million passengers traveled on these routes, which was 10.8% more year-on-year, Belarus’ Transport and Communications Minister Aleksei Lyakhnovich said in an interview with the Economy of Belarus Magazine.

In total, 2.8 million passengers (including transit) were transported through Belarus in railway traffic with Russia in January-September 2025 (an increase of 11.5% compared to the previous year).

According to the minister, the joint tourism project of Belarusian Railways and Russian Railways has been quite successful. In January-September 2025, more than 3,800 people took the tourist train Belarusian Voyage.

"In the Union State [of Belarus and Russia], great attention is paid to developing transport links between the two countries. In December 2025, an additional pair of Lastochka trains began running daily on the Moscow-Minsk route. We plan to launch trains on cross-border suburban railway passenger routes in April 2026, including the Vitebsk-Smolensk and Orsha-Smolensk routes," Aleksei Lyakhnovich noted.

The transport ministries of the two countries have also prepared a draft memorandum on cooperation to build a high-speed railway line between Moscow and Minsk.
