MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) – The Belarusian border services are fully prepared to facilitate the unimpeded passage of people and vehicles through all checkpoints, Chairman of the State Border Committee Konstantin Molostov told reporters following his report to the head of state, BelTA reports.

“The Belarusian border services stand ready to facilitate the unimpeded flow of people and vehicles through all checkpoints and to respond to any developments at the border, thereby fulfilling the objectives set by the president of our country,” Konstantin Molostov assured.

The head of the border agency recalled that from the start of 2024 until October of this year, only two of the five road crossing points on the Lithuanian border were operational: Kamenny Log – adjacent to Medininkai – and Benyakoni – adjacent to Šalčininkai.

In October, the Lithuanian side unilaterally and repeatedly suspended the passage of people and vehicles at the state border. On 26 October, at Lithuania’s initiative, the passage of people and vehicles was suspended at the Šalčininkai crossing point – adjacent to Benyakoni.

“On 30 October, we received official notification from the Lithuanian side regarding their government’s decision to impose restrictions on the passage of persons and vehicles across the state border – primarily affecting citizens of Belarus and Lithuania. However, notifications through the border representative office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were not received in a timely manner, indicating a failure to implement the agreement on border crossing points,” emphasized Konstantin Molostov.

As the chairman of the State Border Committee noted, the Lithuanian side subsequently made repeated proposals through the border representative office to temporarily reopen border crossing points under various terms.

“Obviously, the current situation goes beyond the authority of the border agencies of both countries, and this issue requires resolution at the highest state level,” remarked Konstantin Molostov.

He further noted that the decisions taken by the Lithuanian side are detrimental to cross-border, economic, political, and generally good-neighborly relations, creating problems for citizens of both nations.

Konstantin Molostov also confirmed that, at this stage, border guards – in coordination with customs and police – are ensuring the implementation of the head of state’s directives. This includes directing Lithuanian-registered trucks to designated parking areas and providing the drivers with necessary assistance.
