Minsk center sets all-time record for organ transplants in 2025

MINSK, 12 January (BelTA) - A record high number of organ transplant operations were performed in 2025 at the Minsk Research and Treatment Center for Surgery, Transplantology, and Hematology, said Oleg Rummo, Director of the Center, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Academician, who has been awarded the title “Scientist of the Year of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus 2025”, BelTA has learned.

“Last year was the most successful in terms of the number of operations. We performed 361 kidney transplants, 110 liver transplants, 7 lung transplants, and 53 heart transplants. In total, we conducted 531 transplant surgeries last year. This is an absolute record in the entire history of Belarusian transplantology,” Oleg Rummo noted.
According to him, this means that the number of people who have been saved and now have a chance for a normal, fulfilling life in the country has increased.

Regarding individual cases, Oleg Rummo highlighted several unique operations performed for Belarusians and residents of post-Soviet countries, specifically Uzbekistan, Georgia, and Armenia.

“Since 2019, we have been collaborating with the Arabkir Medical Center for Children and Adolescents in Armenia. Last year, our team traveled twice to perform transplant surgeries. On one occasion, we carried out a transplant. On the second visit, it was determined that a patient, a young child with liver cancer, did not a transplant. Instead, tumor removal surgery could be performed without requiring a transplant,” he said.

He noted that, in this case, removing the tumor safely was more than performing a transplant. ‘It's one thing to remove the entire liver, and another to leave part of it, ensuring that it later regenerates and functions. We managed to perform such an operation in October 2025 at Arabkir, Yerevan,” he said.

According to the director of the center, last year saw many significant milestones. “Overall, 2025 was a successful year both for our center and for Belarusian transplantology,” Oleg Rummo emphasized.
