Minister names tasks for law enforcement at Belarus-Lithuania border

MINSK, 10 November (BelTA) – Belarus’ Minister of Internal Affairs Ivan Kubrakov told journalists about how law enforcement officers are assisting Lithuanian truck drivers stranded in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

“The president tasked the Ministry of Internal Affairs with restoring order in the border area and ensuring road safety. Lithuania unilaterally closed the borders. More than a thousand trucks with Lithuanian registration remained on our territory. They were abandoned chaotically along the roadside, creating and continuing to pose a real threat to road safety. As soon as the task was set, we began work, and today convoys of trucks, escorted by traffic police officers, have already been delivered to guarded parking lots,” Ivan Kubrakov said.

These guarded parking lots are patrolled by law enforcement officers. “The president’s task is still being carried out, because many vehicles were left abandoned. Some drivers, out of desperation, went to stay with acquaintances or relatives. The vehicles remain on the roadside, posing a serious risk to traffic safety, particularly during nighttime hours,” the minister emphasized.

He also added that law enforcement was instructed to provide comprehensive assistance to the drivers. “Drivers approach us, many of whom are in our country for the first time and are unfamiliar with the area. Therefore, we help them reach hotels and food outlets. You can imagine the conditions: many drivers are simply living in the cabins of their trucks. As I am told, they do not mince words when talking about the Lithuanian authorities, who have effectively condemned them to this existence. Our officers are thanked by the drivers for the assistance provided,” Ivan Kubrakov concluded.
