Minister: Belarus ranks 32nd in Environmental Performance Index

MINSK, 13 February (BelTA) - Belarus has ranked 32nd among 180 countries in the Environmental Performance Index 2024, going ahead of all EAEU countries, Belarusian Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Sergei Maslyak said at the press conference on Environmental Safety: New Solutions to Combat Plastic Pollution”, BelTA has learned.

According to Sergei Maslyak, environmental problems which mankind faces are becoming more and more urgent amid rapid growth of industrial production and increasing anthropogenic load on the environment. According to experts, this situation poses a serious threat not only to the ecosystem but also to the health of people and future generations.

“For Belarus, the task of ensuring environmental safety has a national scale, while being one of the most important both for our country and other states,” the minister said.

Strong results have been achieved in mitigating the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, he said. Belarus fulfills international obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“Belarus has ranked 32nd among 180 countries in the Environmental Performance Index, going ahead of all EAEU countries. This index is calculated according to the methodology of the Yale Center for Environmental Policy and Law in cooperation with a group of independent international experts.
The index incorporates 58 indicators in 11 categories to demonstrate the countries’ progress in terms of the state of the environment and natural resources management. However, among the issues still urgent for us are emissions, waste generation, and prevention of ecosystem degradation due to climate change, the effects of which have become more tangible in recent decades,” the minister said.

According to him, in addition to global measures, it is necessary to instill environmental responsibility in every person. Education and awareness-raising plays a key role here.
