MINSK, 13 March (BelTA) - By decision of the Executive Committee of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Belarus, Maxim Ryzhenkov has been awarded the Belarus NOC medal For Outstanding Merits, BelTA has learned.
Belarus’ NOC President Viktor Lukashenko presented the award to Maxim Ryzhenkov, who has led the Belarusian Basketball Federation since 2014. He emphasized that the medal was awarded for outstanding contributions to the development of the Olympic movement, mass sports, and high-performance sports. During Ryzhenkov’s years of leadership, the Federation has made a significant step forward in the development of Belarusian basketball, and its work has become systematic: increasing attention is being paid to work with the younger generation, as well as the development of the refereeing corps and coaching training, and interaction has been established with partners for the development of sports infrastructure and the promotion of 3x3 basketball to the level of an Olympic discipline.
“With the participation of the Federation’s leadership, large-scale projects have been implemented, enabling our country to stage premier international tournaments with a superior level of organization. High professionalism and strategic vision contributed to the significant popularization of Olympic values and the strengthening of the position of national sports in the international arena. At the XXI FIBA World Congress in 2019, the Belarusian Federation was among the best, receiving an award for 3rd place for showing significant progress in 2017-2019 in the development of women’s teams,” Viktor Lukashenko said.

He recalled that basketball has rich traditions in Belarus. National and youth teams have repeatedly achieved high results on the international stage: “We have much to be proud of, and we are grateful to our teams, coaches, and sports veterans who make a significant contribution to the development of basketball. It is symbolic that in the Year of the Belarusian Woman, we often speak in sports specifically about women’s successes and recall their bright achievements. The legend of Belarusian basketball of the Soviet period - Tatyana Beloshapko - is the 1980 Olympic champion. This trend is particularly evident in the sovereign history of Belarus, where it has been the women’s teams that have delighted and distinguished themselves in basketball. In 2007 in Italy, Belarusian women won a bronze medal at the FIBA European Championship. Also significant achievements of the women’s national team are 6th place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 9th place at the 2016 Rio Games.
