Maslenitsa traditions: Potential nominee for UNESCO Cultural Heritage List

MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) - Unique Maslenitsa rituals, included in the list of intangible historical and cultural heritage of Belarus, have the potential to attract attention at the highest international level over time, Kirill Shik, a senior lecturer at the Department of Directing at the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts, told BelTA.

“Belarusian Maslenitsa has every chance of being included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Primarily because our Maslenitsa is very diverse. From region to region, it has preserved distinctive features, including specific rituals such as Pakhavanne Dzeda (Funeral of the Old Man) and Chyrachka, which are nominees for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List,” Kirill Shik noted.

In his opinion, such rituals provide a basis for discussing the uniqueness of Maslenitsa, which is necessary for its inclusion in the Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

“Overall, Maslenitsa is a unique celebration for our culture that has the potential to represent us globally,” he said.
