Lukyanovich: Belarus is building anti-drone system

MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – Belarus is developing a system of countering unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), Major General Andrei Lukyanovich, commander of the Air Force and Air Defense Troops said on the air of the STV TV channel on 18 August, BelTA has learned.
“Analyzing the political and military situation, unmanned aerial vehicles still pose one of the most significant threats. They are widespread, hardly noticeable for radars, and can be used for a variety of purposes. This is a headache for many states. Nowadays, there is no protection against drones. Therefore we do not stand still. We are exploring all the best practices, including those of international military cooperation," Andrei Lukyanovich said.

He added that the Belarusian military studied the experience of China and Iran in this regard. "Belarus is developing a system of countering drones, the main task of which is detection. We have advanced radar stations, including Belarusian-made ones, to detect drones. The second stage is countermeasures using electronic warfare. Then comes destruction, counteraction using air defense missile systems and aviation. I would like to note that the system of electronic warfare and countering aviation is multi-layered and depends on the importance of critical facilities. We are actively working and cooperating in this field," Andrei Lukyanovich explained.

He spoke about step-by-step modernization and renewal of air equipment. "In the spring we received another batch of Mi-35M helicopters. We are expecting two more batches in early 2025: Mi-35 helicopters and Su-30SM2 aircraft,” the commander said. “We are equipping our aircraft with onboard protection complexes. They performed very effectively.”

The air force and air defense forces are made of professionals. Belarus is proud of its aviation traditions. "All air bases are fully-staffed, which allows us to perform all the tasks facing the air force and air defense. Today, 90% of the personnel graduated from the Military Academy of the Republic of Belarus. This is a very high indicator. Personnel is ever polishing their skills; we regularly participate in joint exercises," Andrei Lukyanovich noted.
