MINSK, 29 October (BelTA) – A major meeting of the Belarusian president with the country’s scientific community is scheduled to take place later this year, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Vladimir Karanik said following his report to Aleksandr Lukashenko, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Karanik explained that preparations for this large-scale and significant event are underway on the instructions of the head of state and according to the approved schedule. This issue was also discussed during his report to the president.

“We discussed in detail the progress of preparations for the major meeting with the participation of the head of state, which is scheduled to take place before the end of the year,” the NASB head said. “This meeting will not only include the academic scientific community. The president has requested that it also involves representatives from universities and sectoral scientific organizations, that is all representatives of the scientific community. We must ensure closer integration of science and production, science and education, so that the technological chains ‘idea – fundamental research – applied research – implementation’, as well as ‘education – science – production’ function as effectively as possible.” He stressed that under the current conditions science must constantly move forward and ensure the rapid introduction of research results into practice, which makes it possible to guarantee technological sovereignty.

“This meeting must become a truly landmark event in the development of science in our country,” Vladimir Karanik emphasized.

Along with preparations for this event, work is underway to address shortcomings in the activities of the National Academy of Sciences that had previously been pointed out by the president. “In close contact with members of the working group [to analyze the activities of the NASB, established by president’s order in June 2024] and with the Council of Ministers, proposals have been prepared to improve financing mechanisms, increase support measures for scientists, and optimize the NASB structure,” Vladimir Karanik explained. According to him, these proposals have been agreed with all relevant parties and submitted to the head of state. “Together with the President Administration, we are currently refining these proposals. We very much hope that by the time of the major meeting we will already have ready-made solutions, so that both the head of state and the scientific community will clearly understand the future direction of science, the composition of the NASB management core, the priority areas, and the mechanisms through which the academy’s effectiveness will be enhanced,” Vladimir Karanik added.

The president emphasized the need for this discussion during a meeting with the working group to analyze the activities of the National Academy of Sciences on 5 August. “It is beyond doubt that we must discuss the problems of science development (and the future of our science) with the scientific community. We will do this in the near future, certainly this year,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
