MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) – Parliamentarians are meant to build bridges, not fences, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova said as she addressed a ceremonial meeting of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS IPA) dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The event was held in St. Petersburg, BelTA has learned.

Natalya Kochanova highlighted the deepest crisis in international relations. “The world order is being reshaped before our eyes. The union of inviolable free republics has long ceased to exist, but the West does not abandon its attempts to demonize the Soviet past, chasing ghosts. This means that the power of historical unity is still perceived as a threat by the West. That is why they are dying to divide us,” the speaker said.

The chairperson of the Council of the Republic noted that parliamentarians have a special mission - “to strengthen ties and relationships, not to build fences.” Last year marked the first time the military from the CIS countries and China took part in the parade to celebrate Independence Day of Belarus and the 80th anniversary of the country's liberation from the Nazi invaders. This very fact suggests the readiness to jointly defend the common territory and airspace, the speaker emphasized.

Natalya Kochanova is sure that this is now the responsibility of the current generation.

“It is now the mission of young people to build a new security architecture. We should pass on to them what we have carefully preserved for many years,” the speaker said. “It is important to bolster the winning spirit in young people. Those who will come after us and continue to work in the name of peace and prosperity should be taught the unique Soviet traditions of bringing nations together, defending national interests, preserving our common historical achievements - the Great Victory and labor achievements, our legacy.”

According to the chairperson of the Council of the Republic, it is necessary to find the key to the heart of the younger generation and remove barriers in their path. Belarusian youth is actively involved in all socio-political processes. They come up with initiatives, take part in international scientific conferences, patriotic projects such as Memory Train, Children of the Commonwealth and The Unconquered.

“These unique projects were initiated by our parliaments in order to bring together children from all countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States and help them build long-lasting friendships on the basis of common historical memory, values and centuries-old traditions,” said Natalya Kochanova.

“We believe that the consolidation of efforts to preserve historical truth in the fight against the Nazis and their accomplices will continue. We hope that reason will eventually prevail among Western politicians and they will replace aggressive rhetoric with constructive dialogue. After all, sooner or later, all conflicts and wars end at the negotiating table during the peace process. And the task of the CIS parliamentarians is to lay the foundation for this based on justice, humanity, the tragic lessons of history and the Great Victory. Who else but us, the heirs of the victors, should carry on this truth, the truth without a statute of limitations?” the speaker added.
