Kochanova: Belarus is committed to developing all-round cooperation with South Africa

MINSK, 27 January (BelTA) - Belarus and South Africa need to intensify relations, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Natalya Kochanova said as she met with Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Refilwe Maria Mtshweni-Tsipane in Minsk on 27 January, BelTA learned.

“Your visit to our country, I am sure, will give a new impetus to cooperation. We are committed to developing cooperation in absolutely all areas: trade and economy, humanitarian and parliamentary dimensions,” Natalya Kochanova said.

The Speaker thanked the delegation for their participation in the observation of the president election in Belarus. “It is a great honor for us to have you by our side at such an important period in the life of our country,” Natalya Kochanova said. “All observers give a high assessment of the election campaign. And, of course, we were pleased to hear the assessment from our colleagues from the Pan-African Parliament.”
The chairperson of the Council of the Republic believes that the promising areas of cooperation include regional ties, exchange of business visits, supply of agricultural products to the markets of the two countries, training of students from South Africa in Belarusian universities, interaction in healthcare, youth policy, and at the level of women's public associations.

Following the meeting, the parties signed a memorandum of cooperation between the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus and the National Council of Provinces of the Republic of South Africa.

Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic Sergei Aleinik noted that the sides agreed to deepen relations. The memorandum was signed as a follow-up to the agreement signed in 2007 and envisages active cooperation at the inter-parliamentary level, between specialized commissions, exchange of experience, preparation of a roadmap with the inclusion of specific projects, etc. The memorandum was signed in the framework of the agreement.

“We agreed to pool together the efforts of the legislative and executive branches of government in order to bring bilateral cooperation to a qualitatively new level, to rejuvenate the existing mechanisms of interaction,” Sergei Aleinik said. “We also paid special attention to the development of interregional cooperation. In the near future we will outline steps for all the regions of Belarus to launch specific projects of economic, social and humanitarian cooperation with the provinces of South Africa.

The delegation of the National Council of Provinces of the Republic of South Africa also visited the Belarusian tractor maker MTS to learn more about the line-up.
