KGB chief: Belarus, Poland, Baltic states are gradually reaching understanding

MINSK, 14 October (BelTA) - Belarus, Poland, and the Baltic states are gradually reaching an understanding of mutual interests and are establishing mutual understanding, Chairman of Belarus’ KGB Ivan Tertel told journalists following a meeting chaired by the head of state to discuss the situation in the world and Belarus-USA relations in Minsk on 14 October, BelTA has learned.

“Of course, we discussed relations with our neighbors, traditionally Poland and the Baltic states. It is probably no secret that we maintain communication channels with our partners. This dialogue continues, including at the level of intelligence agencies. I would say that we are gradually reaching an understanding. We discuss acute issues and, in some cases, reach an understanding of mutual interests,” the KGB chairman stated.

“Our mutual interest is a stable situation in the region, a working economy, and people’s employment. It is the peaceful life of our citizens with prospects for the future, the absence of conflict situations, and a general de-escalation of the existing tension that we all hear about,” Ivan Tertel said.

He stressed that the position of the Belarusian president remains unchanged: one does not choose one’s neighbors. “We have always treated our neighbors with respect, no matter who they are, and we have never interfered in their affairs. We have always been committed to finding consensus. The position of the head of state remains the same,” the KGB chairman noted.
