MINSK, 21 March (BelTA) - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) praised Belarus' experience in radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Energy Ministry.

A Belarusian delegation led by Head of the Department for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Emergencies Ministry of Belarus (Gosatomnadzor) Olga Lugovskaya presented Belarus’ national report at the eighth meeting of contracting parties to review compliance with the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management held at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna.

During the meeting, the Belarusian side delivered the report on the main areas of the development of a radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management system. The report also focused on measures to ensure nuclear and radiation safety, the stages of a planned project to construct a radioactive waste disposal facility and efforts to improve the legal and regulatory framework.

During a panel discussion, the Belarusian delegation received over 20 questions from the participants from various countries. This demonstrated the interest in Belarus' experience.

"Following the review of the national report, the participants spoke highly of Belarus' experience in developing and strengthening human resources in radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management, involving a wide range of specialized organizations and the expert community to shape the radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management system and fostering international cooperation," the Energy Ministry stated.
The Belarusian delegation included representatives of Gosatomnadzor, the Energy Ministry, and the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

Belarus has been a party to the Joint Convention since 2003 and participates in all of its review meetings. These meetings are held to review compliance with international obligations and examine policies and practices for managing spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste.
