MINSK, 27 January (BelTA) - Without the wisdom and foresight of Aleksandr Lukashenko, Eastern Europe would have been in a completely different situation, Chairman of the Hungarian Workers' Party Gyula Thürmer said at a press conference in the CEC Information Center in Minsk on 27 January, BelTA has learned.
“We congratulate the Belarusian people on this victory. When it comes to the victory, it may be irrelevant to discuss the events that took place 5 years ago. But I think, if we do not recall the events of 2020, then we will not fully understand the significance of yesterday's choice made by the Belarusian people,” he said. “Five years ago, some Belarusians believed that it was necessary to take another path of development, subordinate the country to the West, privatize state industries, divide Belarusian society into opposing social groups, and last but not least, start a war in Belarus. But, thank God, there was another option: to preserve the sovereignty of the Republic of Belarus, develop the national economy, protect the national dignity of the Belarusian people, rely on friendly allied ties with Russia and preserve peace in the country.”
“Today we congratulate not only the Belarusian people, but also the winner of the election: President Aleksandr Lukashenko,” the observer added. "We should be grateful to him: without his wisdom, foresight, courage, I think that both Belarus and Eastern Europe, including Hungary, would have been in a completely different situation. The war would not be limited to Ukraine's borders, but could have spread further. We are happy that the Hungarian government has shown courage: when the European Union issued a joint statement yesterday condemning Belarus for yesterday's election, the Hungarian government and Mr. Orbán [Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán] did not sign it.”
