Historian: Gas prices are a significant factor affecting U.S. presidential approval

MINSK, 10 January (BelTA) – Gas prices are a significant factor affecting U.S. presidential approval, historian Yevgeny Spitsyn said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The expert believes that White House head Donald Trump does not seek prolonged armed conflicts. “What tactic has Trump adopted? He does not need heavy, protracted wars like the Vietnam War. And on what field is he playing? Not only on the international one but also on the domestic front. It is extremely important for him to successfully navigate the elections for the House and the Senate, as his own political fate depends on this. Therefore, he needs to score points,” Yevgeny Spitsyn noted.

“Not being its citizens or residents we don't know America very well. However, I have spoken with people who have lived in the USA for several decades. They are our former compatriots, living in different states. For any U.S. president, what is the most critical factor for his ratings and popularity? The price of gasoline,” the historian emphasized. “Because in the United States, there is essentially no public transportation. Every household there has several cars.”

He added that railway transport is infrequently used in the United States, and all freight transportation is carried out by trucks. “Therefore, the price of gasoline plays a key role in the mindset of the average American,” Yevgeny Spitsyn noted.

“Trump absolutely must outmaneuver the Democrats in the parliamentary elections,” the historian said. “Because, after all, the United States has a true separation of powers between at least two branches: the executive and the legislative. The U.S. Congress holds quite significant powers, including those related to impeachment.”
