"On Point"
MINSK, 15 October (BelTA) – Statements about possible supplies of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine is Washington’s attempt to secure advantages in talks with Moscow, Doctor of Political Sciences, expert on national security and the Middle East Simon Tsipis said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“Carl von Clausewitz, one of the classic military theorists, said that troop movements ultimately serve negotiating purposes. That is to say, missile promises (Patriot yesterday, Tomahawk today, something else tomorrow) and threats are simply efforts to secure advantages at the negotiating table,” Simon Tsipis said.
According to the expert, every negotiation involves a strong party and a weaker party. “Sometimes one side faces only one outcome: complete surrender. We saw this with Germany in both World War I and World War II,” he added.
Coming back to the potential delivery of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, Simon Tsipis linked these steps with the intention to conduct talks from a dominant position. “Since the United States has no leverage over Russia, it has to create it artificially. And here, they pull the ace from their sleeve: we have Tomahawks. If you don’t accept our terms, we will send them to Ukraine,” Simon Tsipis explained the logic of the U.S. leadership.
The expert pointed out that the leaders of the EU countries, who declare their readiness to send their troops to Ukraine, are guided by a similar logic. “As if these units have not been there until now. Simply put, they were deployed under the cover of PMCs and military consultants. Europe’s regular troops haven’t been dispatched there yet, and these declarations also serve as bargaining chips for future talks,” he concluded.
