"On Point"
MINSK, 29 June (BelTA) - The White Palace was one of the iconic places in Brest Fortress, senior lecturer of the history department t Belarusian State University Sergei Kaun said in a new latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Brest Fortress was very badly destroyed as a result of bombing, artillery shelling and detonation of the ammunition depot, and the White Palace did not survive. Nevertheless, people survived in the casemates of Brest Fortress for a very long time.
“There was even a legend that people were still there until 1942. The famous Soviet writer Boris Vasiliyev, the author of the famous story The Dawns Here Are Quiet was inspired by this legend and he used in another well-known story Not On The Lists. It tells about a lieutenant who fought in Brest Fortress almost until 1942” Sergei Kaun said.
Although this story is more of a legend, the defense of Brest Fortress really became a symbol of the resilience of Soviet soldiers. This is confirmed by the famous inscription that survived on the wall of the fortress: “I'm dying, but I won't surrender! Farewell Motherland!” It dates back to 20 July 1941 which shows that individual fighters and commanders continued to fight for almost a month.
