Expert: Russia, Belarus need to strive for digital independence

MINSK, 11 October (BelTA) – Russia and Belarus need to establish an independent digital space, editor-in-chief of PolitRussia, political scientist Ruslan Ostashko said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“Digitalization and artificial intelligence are currently a major threat to humanity for one simple reason: the core computing power and algorithms remain under American control. China is striving to catch up, building its own infrastructure, but it still lags behind. As for us, I won’t even comment: unfortunately, the gap is even greater. We are deeply concerned about this issue. In Belarus, too,  the problem is recognized: technoparks and clusters are being created. Yet the reality is that we remain significantly behind, and this is where attention must be focused,” Ruslan Ostashko said.

According to him, the hostilities in Ukraine have accelerated the development of military technologies. New weapons are emerging, while the software and internal components of munitions are being improved.

“U.S. publications reported that the Patriot air defense system is no longer effective against Russian missiles. The missiles themselves remain unchanged, but their internal components and algorithms have been modernized. A missile is costly, but the software is relatively inexpensive. By modifying the cheaper element, we have managed to overcome the expensive hardware known as Patriot. Having realized that this direction is extremely promising,  we must now prioritize the creation of an independent digital space that would encompass Belarus, Russia, and potentially China and India,” the political scientist stressed.
