"On Point"
MINSK, 20 October (BelTA) – Russia and the United States seek to break deadlock in bilateral relations, Russian political scientist and orientalist Karine Gevorgyan said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
According to Karine Gevorgyan, this work is very difficult, as many problems have accumulated in the relations between the two countries in recent years. This is precisely why, the analyst believes, no breakthrough solutions should be expected from bilateral meetings between the leaders of Russia and the USA: first of all, they need to work through the pile of existing problems. And dialogue contributes to this.
“There is no need to rush. That is why there will be some ups and downs in the media for now. Let the people work. First, they need to clear the air and dispel the fears of mutual destruction, something no one wants,” Karine Gevorgyan emphasized.
One of the most important topics on the negotiation agenda is enhancing Russia-USA economic cooperation. The political scientist sees a direct link to this in the recent media discussions about building a tunnel connecting the two countries. “Trump needs projects because he has a big country and the situation is challenging,” the expert stated. “Just watch who is on the accompanying delegation. That will reveal the tasks that they are going to address in order to work with each other.”
She also noted that on a personal level, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump genuinely enjoy communicating with each other, regardless of their tough talk. In contrast, the U.S. president adopts a wholly different approach in his interactions with European allies. “He really despises and distrusts all these so-called allies!” Karine Gevorgyan said.
