MINSK, 15 March (BelTA) - The conflict in the Middle East has shown that so-called international law has failed spectacularly, Editor-in-Chief of the Words and Meanings almanac Elena Kondratieva-Salgueiro (France) said in a recent episode of BelTA’s YouTube project V Teme [On Point].
“This entire conflict has shown only that the fundamental idea of globalism, on which the European Union and so-called international law have floated and stayed afloat until now, has failed spectacularly. What international law? Who enforces it? And who has ever enforced it? All these institutions - the United Nations, the ‘Blue Helmets’ [UN peacekeeping forces] - who and when have they actually helped? Where have they shown themselves to be at all significant or needed by anyone?” said Elena Kondratieva-Salgueiro.
In her opinion, if one is to adhere to the concept of international law, there must be forces that ensure its application. “What forces are these? Do they have a police force? Whose? American? Russian? Israeli? European? None,” the expert said. “So what are we talking about then? That we need to change all the concepts and institutions is one thing. Another thing is that now, no matter how much you back away, you will still end up back-to-back or face-to-face with someone who is attacking you or trying to destabilize you. That means we need to figure out exactly which rules and institutions should be changed in order to provide at least some guarantee of universal security.”
Elena Kondratieva-Salgueiro recalled that when NATO bombed Belgrade in 1999, the UN Security Council opposed it. However, the position of the main international organization had no impact whatsoever.
“In other words, it is not enough to establish or formulate some new rules and create a new council, just to feed yet another cohort of officials. You also need to ensure that these rules, if necessary, can simply be implemented through coercion, and that this coercion must be provided by someone. No ‘Blue Helmets’ or UN forces have ever provided anything to anyone,” the analyst added.
