Expert: German authorities rely on militarization to shift focus from social issues

MINSK, 13 May (BelTA) - The German authorities are using militarization to shift public attention away from social issues, Oleg Yanovsky, a lecturer at MGIMO University, said in the latest episode of BelTA’s V Teme [On Point] project.

Oleg Yanovsky recalled the promises of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to make the German army the strongest in Europe. In his inaugural speech, the German politician said that the ruling coalition would provide the Bundeswehr with all the necessary financial resources. According to German experts, an additional €350‑400 billion is needed to modernize Germany’s armed forces.

“They are not talking like this for nothing. They are relying on analytics, focus groups and public opinion surveys. In other words, militarization has become a central part in political campaigns. They see militarization as a way to shift public attention away from social issues, justify a mobilization regime and justify restrictions. This is the only way to survive in a situation where there is no United States, no global market, no free logistics routes, no cheap energy resources,” Oleg Yanovsky said. “Today’s political discourse focuses on militarization, or rather on war itself.”

The expert suggested that Germany, together with France, would try to become a center of power within NATO. However, he is not sure that Germany and France will be able to compete with London for the role of Europe’s military hub. “London does not have that much money, but it has already built all the systems and formats. So Germany will find it easier to simply fit into them. Most likely, we will see a historically unexpected alliance,” Oleg Yanovsky said.
