"On Point"
MINSK, 18 August (BelTA) – The United States does not consider itself a participant in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and is distancing itself from EU pressure, military expert and political analyst Yakov Kedmi said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
According to Yakov Kedmi, the U.S. side has clearly defined its position. “The Americans have repeatedly stated, both Trump, Vance, and Rubio: we are not part of the Ukraine-Russia conflict. We do not intend to participate in it,” he emphasized.
In his view, the US is distancing itself from the conflict while preserving its economic and strategic interests, avoiding direct military involvement. European countries, the analyst said, have been left to act independently, receiving only commercial support from Washington.
He clarified that a day before meeting with European leaders, Trump stated that United States could provide security guarantees for Ukraine but outside of NATO and without the alliance's involvement. “If we, the United States, decide that it is in our national interest to give guarantees to Ukraine, we will do so. This has nothing to do with you,” he recalled Trump's words.
Yakov Kedmi also noted that arms supply to Europeans by the US remains possible, but strictly on a commercial basis. “Rubio said: we will supply Europe with as much weapons as it wants to buy for Ukraine. We will not subsidize them. If you want them, buy them. This is not our national interest,” he explained.
The expert stressed that European countries, with the exception of the UK, poorly understand modern U.S. politics and continue to live in the past. “The countdown has begun for the European Union, the countdown has begun for NATO, because NATO is no longer needed by the US. It adds nothing, it only takes from them,” Yakov Kedmi remarked.
