MINSK, 18 November (BelTA) – The corruption scandal in Ukraine will affect not only the country’s leadership but also Western European politicians, member of the Another Ukraine movement, former deputy of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada Spiridon Kilinkarov said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The former Ukrainian MP spoke about the potential consequences of the corruption scandal in Ukraine. To recap, the scandal revolves around a major corruption scheme in the energy industry. As part of the investigation, searches were conducted at several locations, including those linked to businessman Timur Mindich, Ukrainian Justice Minister German Galushchenko, and the Energoatom company. Officials state that the criminal network laundered no less than $100 million.
“I believe the consequences will be primarily political. And not only for the Ukrainian political elite, but also for Western European politicians. The fact is that for a very long period, there has been public debate about whether Ukraine should be funded or not. Some considered it a corrupt state, while others viewed Zelensky’s regime as people fighting the ‘ultimate evil’, the Russian Federation, defending the sovereignty and independence of their own country,” Spiridon Kilinkarov said.
According to the expert, this scandal has proven right those who considered Ukraine a corrupt state. “We are talking about a gang of corrupt officials who usurped power and stole from their country during wartime,” he believes.
Spiridon Kilinkarov noted that one of those who spoke about corruption in Ukraine was U.S. President Donald Trump. At the same time, Vladimir Zelensky and other representatives of the Ukrainian leadership were primarily defended by politicians from Western European states. “That is why this scandal will inevitably have consequences for them as well. Although both Zelensky and the Europeans are trying to minimize these consequences. Zelensky is touring the frontline zone, taking photos with children... The head of his office is making statements that Zelensky actually has no connection to this corruption scandal...” the former deputy of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada said.
