Expert: EU support of Ukraine is driven by financial gain

MINSK, 21 November (BelTA) – European politicians cannot stop supporting Ukraine because many of them are making enormous profits from this armed conflict, member of the Another Ukraine movement, former member of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada Spiridon Kilinkarov said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
According to the former Verkhovna Rada member, more and more ordinary citizens of Western countries have begun to doubt the need to support Ukraine. This is also linked to the scandal with a money laundering scheme in Ukraine’s energy sector uncovered. Thus, Spiridon Kilinkarov believes, the population of Western countries could once again see that Ukraine is led by corrupt officials.

“Of course, Europeans [referring to European politicians] will face very serious problems. But they have no good solution. Even after certain governments change and new people assume the positions of prime minister, chancellor, president, and so forth, the policy remains the same. Their system ensures the continuity of power. That is, the government changes, but the policy does not. Consequently, the new politicians take on responsibility for ongoing matters, including policy towards Ukraine,” Spiridon Kilinkarov explained.

Thus, he believes, even after a change of certain European leaders, the European Union’s support for Ukraine will not cease. “This is already their war, and therefore their responsibility. From this point of view, they cannot admit the fact that they were dealing with a corrupt regime. Did they know about the corruption? Absolutely! Of course, they understood the scale of this corruption too,” the expert said.

Spiridon Kilinkarov is convinced that the names of European politicians who were paid to simply parrot pre-written scripts in support of Ukraine will eventually come to light. “To a European politician, a million dollars or euros is a fortune. In fact, on their official salary, they’d be unlikely to save that amount of money in their entire career. Yet, here it is, offered just for visiting Ukraine, making anti-Russian statements, and reciting prepared lines. Under these conditions, who would have any incentive to end the war?” the former Verkhovna Rada member said.

From this perspective, he emphasized, the war is profitable for European politicians. Western countries are not sending their people to participate in hostilities but are only spending their taxpayers’ money. “As long as taxpayers remain silent, they are free to spend the money as they please,” Spiridon Kilinkarov added.
