"On Point"
MINSK, 13 June (BelTA) - Militarization is transforming the European Union from an economic bloc into a military one, national security expert Aleksandr Tishchenko said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
“The European Union has already outlived itself economically, historically, and politically. The ideas that were originally laid down in the European Union are gradually being phased out. It is impossible to combine militarization and social policy,” said Aleksandr Tishchenko. According to the expert, militarization can only be carried out at the expense of ordinary citizens, reducing their standard of living and social benefits. Some EU countries have already begun to cut social benefits, primarily for pensioners.
“Militarization is transforming the European Union from an economic project into a military one. This comes against the backdrop of fears that Europe will be left without NATO and the support of the United States. So there is nothing left but to choose tanks over economic development,” Aleksandr Tishchenko emphasized. “This is just panic. Militarization shows how panicked EU politicians are. They're used to the USA paying for this ‘garden of paradise’ they've made out of Europe. But the USA is so deep in debt that it is thinking about how to get rid of some extra weight. Europe happens to be that weight.”
