"On Point"
MINSK, 15 January (BelTA) - Regarding Iran, I would say that the issue is not merely about overthrowing the ayatollahs' regime, but also about destabilizing the Greater Middle East, Elena Ponomareva, Doctor of Political Science, Professor at MGIMO, said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The expert believes that the “case of Maduro” and the escalation of the situation around Iran have a complex nature. On one hand, it involves regimes disloyal to the United States, which the White House aims to break or bring into its service. “In the case of Iran, for example, it's not just about overthrowing the ayatollahs' regime; it seems to me that it's about destabilizing the Greater Middle East,” the MGIMO professor believes.
She added that there is no single Anglo-Saxon bloc pursuing exclusively its own interests. “Starting from the 19th century, that Great Britain has colossal influence in this part of Eurasia - the Middle East, India. These are, so to speak, zones of Britain's strategic interests. This destabilization of the Greater Middle East addresses several objectives. First and foremost, it is a strike by Britain against its adversaries. Of course, this also concerns China and the Russian Federation,” the political analyst explained.
The expert emphasized that Latin America has effectively almost capitulated, and moreover, a certain negative image of the countries in this region is being imposed on the average user in social media. “Super-technologies of pressure are being used. When you look at social media, when certain American politicians declare themselves governors of Cuba, for example, or President Trump sees himself as such, and so on,” Elena Ponomareva said. “It’s a very successful technological tactic: through memes, through jokes to establish a certain attitude towards this region, towards a particular country.”
Such a strategy works very effectively, the expert said.
