"On Point"
MINSK, 21 August (BelTA) – In the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel, Andrei Bogodel, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Education and Science – Head of the Education and Methodology Department of the Faculty of the General Staff of the Armed Forces at the Military Academy of Belarus, shared his views on what Russian President Vladimir Putin might have offered U.S. President Donald Trump during their meeting in Alaska.
“Putin offered Trump something that Europe could not. I believe the proposal was very simple. But first, we must recall the ideas and motivations Trump brought with him. He was obsessed with the Arctic. Regarding these aspects, Russia has far more direct interests with the USA in the Arctic than in Ukraine. This includes, in particular, the non-recognition of the Northern Sea Route,” Andrei Bogodel said.
According to the expert, Vladimir Putin might have proposed that Donald Trump engage in joint exploration of the Arctic. This is linked to the fact that Russia does not fully possess the technologies and capabilities required for its development. “It is clear that American technologies would be deployed there. Then the question would arise of where to export the oil. To transport it, the Northern Sea Route could be developed. On mutually beneficial terms, Russia would resolve many of its pressing issues. Moreover, this aligns perfectly with Trump's interests,” Andrei Bogodel believes.
