MINSK, 16 December (BelTA) – In the European Union it is now every man for himself, with everyone seeking to maximize profits and capitalize on the current situation, which is evidenced by the corruption scandals that have rocked the Western political establishment, Elena Ponomareva, Doctor of Political Science, Professor at MGIMO (Moscow State Institute of International Relations), said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“Europe in its present shape, under the boot of the Brussels bureaucracy, is being written off. This Europe is being cast adrift from the course of history. That is evident. However, such profound transformations cannot be swift. The role of inertia is tremendous, and the human factor is also significant,” Elena Ponomareva noted. “The supranational bodies, this very EU bureaucracy, have pushed Europe to the brink of a civilizational crisis. This crisis point is defined by economic, social, cultural, and political factors. Take, for example, the decline in Europe’s share of global GDP. In the 1990s, it accounted for a quarter of the world’s GDP. Back then, the European Union was not yet fully formed, it was still taking shape. Now, it’s just 14% of the global GDP. Even these dry figures indicate a difficult economic situation. Major German conglomerates, the very pillars of Germany’s economic might, are moving operations to the USA or China, driven by the pursuit of affordable energy and other factors.”

The MGIMO professor believes that modern Europe looks different compared to what it was just a few years ago. “Europe’s face has already completely changed. The promotion of policies that negate the traditional family and seek to legally redefine the very essence of marriage – this is what is driving Europe to a civilizational dead end and precipice,” Elena Ponomareva noted.

The expert mentioned that one writer predicted a return to the Middle Ages for Europe, where numerous small entities would appear in place of large states. “Such scenario is quite possible,” the political analyst believes.
