"On Point"
MINSK, 11 September (BelTA) – The efforts of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko to develop new formats of political and economic integration are a response to the demands of the time, Russian journalist and military expert, editor-in-chief of the Russian National Defense Magazine, said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
“We know that the Belarusian economy has faced a number of sanctions from its closest European neighbors. Moreover, these restrictive measures are absolutely discriminatory, founded on neither moral nor legal norms,” Igor Korotchenko said. “Their aim is to destroy the Belarusian economy and society and to set in motion internal transformation processes following the pattern of a color revolution.”
The expert stated that such attempts against Belarus have been made, are being made, and will be made by the West. “Another thing is that Belarusian society and the state have resilience. And such a leader as Aleksandr Lukashenko – the most experienced politician on the European continent and in whole Eurasia. All this helps to avert worst-case scenarios,” he believes.
At the same time, Igor Korotchenko stressed that the economy is the foundation of a prosperous society, a resilient state, and a strong national defense: “This is why Minsk focuses on formats for economic cooperation, both through the Union State of Belarus and Russia and within the CIS, as well as in broader alliances like the SCO.”
The expert noted that Belarusian goods have earned well-deserved demand and respect in dozens of states, including products of the light industry, agriculture, the military-industrial complex, and the mechanical engineering cluster.
“Having preserved the best of its Soviet legacy, Belarus has significantly multiplied its capacity to produce and modernize across various economic sectors. And, of course, it needs reliable markets, since the Belarusian economy is largely export-oriented,” Igor Korotchenko stressed. “In this regard, President Lukashenko’s efforts to develop new formats of political and economic integration are a response to the demands of the time.”
