CEC chief: Preparations for Belarus’ 2024 elections are proceeding as planned

MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) – Preparations for the parliamentary and local elections on the single voting day are proceeding as planned, in a calm and smooth way, Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus Igor Karpenko told reporters before the CEC meeting, BelTA has learned.

“Preparations for the elections are proceeding calmly and as planned, no incidents have been reported. To date, the Central Election Commission has received about 200 verbal appeals from individuals. As a rule, these appeals seek to clarify what kind of documents should be submitted at various stages of the election campaign, and how one or another norm of electoral legislation is applied,” said Igor Karpenko.

According to the chairman of the Central Election Commission, 4,439 national observers have been registered so far: “But this is only for territorial commissions. Now the formation of precinct election commissions is underway, a total of 5,411 of them have been set up. And of course, national observers will be present at precinct commissions; thus, the number of observers could increase manifold.”

Igor Karpenko added that as of 22 January, 58 international observers were registered. “Yesterday we met with the head of the CIS election observation mission. Long-term observers of the mission have started working in Belarus already. In our opinion, there will be quite a lot of international observers. We are preparing about 300 packages of documents for them so that the observers feel comfortable in Belarus and can freely monitor the elections on our single voting day,” the chairman of the CEC said.
