MINSK, 14 May (BelTA) – Catholics are celebrating one of the great feasts, the Feast of the Ascension.

The Ascension always falls on a Thursday and is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter.

According to the Gospel, on the 40th day after the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples in Jerusalem. Christ spoke with them about the events they had witnessed and participated in, and about the imminent descent of the Holy Spirit upon them, which would give them the strength to preach Christianity throughout the world. Jesus led the apostles out of the city to the Mount of Olives, blessed them, and began to withdraw, ascending into heaven. Then two angels appeared to the apostles, who were saddened by their separation from the Teacher, and foretold the second coming of Christ.

The great Feast of the Ascension commemorates Christ’s passage from the earthly world to the spiritual one, as well as His promise to return to earth at the end of time.

By tradition, on Ascension Day, people bake pies with green onions and symbolic little ladders (elongated loaves of bread, rolls, pies, and coulibiacs decorated with dough ornaments in the form of cuts and rungs resembling ladder steps).
