MINSK, 16 May (BelTA) – Belarus-Russia joint army exercise Zapad 2025 is purely defensive in nature, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said as he met with Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin in Minsk on 16 May, BelTA has learned.

Andrei Belousov said after the talks with Viktor Khrenin that the main event of combat training for the regional group of forces this year will be the Belarusian-Russian exercise Zapad 2025. “I would like to emphasize the purely defensive nature of this event. We plan to jointly work out actions to repel aggression against the Union State using the regional group of forces of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation,” said Andrei Belousov.
He also added that today's meeting showed the full unity of approaches of Russia and Belarus to all key issues of strategy, assessment of challenges and threats, and also to taking urgent joint measures to level them off. “As part of this work, we continue to actively strengthen military and military-technical cooperation, improve interaction on the joint use of armed forces to ensure the military security of our countries. We pay special attention to improving the combat capabilities of the regional group of forces, joint operational and combat training,” the Russian defense minister said.
According to Andrei Belousov, this year our countries are celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War on a large scale. “I know, Viktor Gennadyevich [Khrenin], that your grandfathers fought at the fronts as well,” he said.
The Russian defense minister presented his Belarusian colleague with a selection of archive materials telling about the glorious war path of his ancestors.
