Belarusian diplomats commemorate Soviet soldiers in Hungary’s Szeged

MINSK, 25 April (BelTA) - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to Hungary Vladimir Ulakhovich took part in a ceremony to reopen the Soviet war memorial at the Dugonich cemetery in Szeged after large-scale renovations, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Embassy in Hungary.

The burial ground consists of 191 gravestones and 35 mass graves. It is the resting place for 1,084 soldiers and officers of the Red Army.

Representatives of the Embassies of Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia and Venezuela, as well as Hungarian public organizations laid wreaths at the central obelisk commemorating the Soviet soldiers who liberated the Hungarian territories on the left bank of the Tisza from the Nazis in October 1944 as part of the Debrecen Offensive Operation.

The church service for the deceased was performed by Archpriest John Kadar of the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Budapest.

The opening ceremony of the Soviet war burial site in Szeged, which is the largest Soviet grave in eastern Hungary, marked an important milestone in the series of memorial events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory.
