Belarus’ Western Operational Command troops gear up for major exercise

MINSK, 14 March (BelTA) - As part of the combat readiness inspection of the Armed Forces, troops of the Western Operational Command are preparing for a comprehensive exercise, BelTA learned from the Defense Ministry.

The Defense Ministry noted that military units and subunits are conducting marches using a combined method, deploying to assembly areas, and preparing weapons and equipment for combat training missions. Countermeasures against drones and sabotage and reconnaissance groups of a simulated enemy are also being practiced.
Reserve Senior Sergeant Igor Kovalchuk said that he is serving as the section commander for the command-and-staff vehicle of an artillery battery. “It's a responsible and interesting position. During recent live-fire exercises, I provided the combat vehicle crews with firing coordinates. Using these coordinates, the artillery engaged the specified targets. We handled the task excellently. Ahead of us is a large-scale exercise: we are loading our equipment onto trains and securely fastening the vehicles. I am confident that we will perform well in this next stage of the combat readiness inspection,” he said.
“While serving as a gun commander, I thoroughly mastered the 2S3 Akatsiya self-propelled howitzer. During the inspection, we conducted live fire from closed firing positions. Our close-knit and well-coordinated crew accomplished the assigned task and successfully engaged all designated targets. The crew consists of reservists of different ages, from different places, and with different professions. But this does not prevent us from understanding each other fast. Everyone takes the inspection seriously,” Reserve Sergeant Maksim Satskevich said.

Private Aleksandr Zhurkevich, a reservist, shared that he completed his mandatory military service seven years ago. “I understand the importance of call-up from the reserve for training: you always need to be ready to defend your country. My wife and son are waiting for me at home. I feel a sense of responsibility for their safety, for the peace on Belarusian land. I have gained immense experience during the training. We overcome any difficulties that arise together,” he noted.

A combat readiness inspection of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus  began on 26 January. It is comprehensive inspection, with a phased increase in both personnel and the number of military units and subunits involved in the effort.
