MINSK, 27 May (BelTA) - During an official visit to Egypt, the delegation of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus led by Speaker Igor Sergeyenko met with the Arab Parliament leadership on 27 May, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.
During the talks with Deputy Speaker of the Arab Parliament Tareq Nusair, the parties focused on strengthening inter-parliamentary ties with Arab states and Belarus' peace initiatives.
Igor Sergeyenko emphasized the commitment of the Belarusian Parliament to establishing and developing relations with international parliamentary structures. He highlighted that last year, the Belarusian Parliament received observer status in the Pan-African Parliament. The Arab Parliament holds the same status in this organization. The speaker also noted that Belarus is a full-fledged member in the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly. Belarus supported the proposal to grant the Arab Parliament observer status in this international organization in St. Petersburg in April this year.
Igor Sergeyenko expressed confidence that both parties have ample opportunities and platforms to expand inter-parliamentary dialogue. "We have established bilateral or regional friendship groups with almost all countries of the Arab Parliament. We are ready to further strengthen political and inter-parliamentary contacts, ensuring they are backed by a clear agenda, especially since we have common interests," he stated.
The speaker suggested identifying promising and beneficial projects for cooperation between Belarus and the Arab Parliament, which could serve as drivers of relationship development. "I am confident that our cooperation will contribute to finding effective solutions to global challenges. Recently, Belarus initiated the development of the Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st century. This document aims to define a common vision of a fair multipolar world, where every country has the opportunity for sustainable sovereign development and equal cooperation. I invite the Arab Parliament to participate in the implementation of this initiative," Igor Sergeyenko stated.
He emphasized the importance of establishing strong ties with the Arab Parliament, particularly for exchanging legislative experience. "We are ready to discuss any initiatives and work towards the future. We are always open to constructive dialogue, considering our positions in the interest of our peoples' well-being, stability, and prosperity," Igor Sergeyenko said.
The Arab Parliament is an inter-parliamentary organization established to coordinate the activities of national parliaments from 22 Arab countries and discuss common matters. Currently, Türkiye is the only country to hold observer status in the Arab Parliament.
The Belarusian delegation and Belarusian business representatives met with Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan El Khatib on 27 May.
During the talks, the parties confirmed that the Belarusian-Egyptian Joint Trade Commission, co-chaired by Hassan El Khatib, is the primary mechanism to coordinate bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Igor Sergeyenko emphasized that holding the next commission meeting will contribute to preparations for the highest-level visit to Belarus. He also noted that Belarus is eager to finalize the event’s timeline as soon as possible.
The parties emphasized their interest in increasing volumes and expanding the range of supplies of Belarusian products to Egypt, including for the implementation of infrastructure projects in Egypt.
