MINSK, 1 October (BelTA) - Prosecutors from Belarus and Russia discussed the perpetuation of the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Soviet people at an international seminar, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Prosecutor General's Office.

An international seminar was held via video conference at the Belarusian Prosecutor General's Office on the topic: “Practices and mechanisms for improving legislation on perpetuating the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Soviet people and the defenders of the Fatherland, preserving the historical truth about the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. Exchange of prosecutorial oversight experience in the enforcement of military-memorial legislation”.

In his opening remarks, Andrei Karachenko, Head of the Department for Environmental and Land Use Oversight at the Belarusian Prosecutor General's Office, outlined the priority areas of activity for memorializing the defenders of the Fatherland and the victims of the genocide of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War. He highlighted the potential for Belarus and Russia to collaborate on search, archival, and research work aimed at identifying unknown burial sites and the personal data of the deceased who are buried in unmarked graves.

In light of recent legislative changes in the Russian Federation concerning the commemoration of genocide victims, the speaker pointed to the possibility of standardizing approaches within the framework of the Union State, as well as utilizing the experience accumulated in Belarus on this matter.

He also touched upon the potential for Belarus and Russia to exchange cultural artifacts from the Great Patriotic War period that, for various reasons, have ended up in the museum collections of the other state.

In conclusion, the seminar participants exchanged views on issues of memorialization, including archival research and the development of military-historical routes. The parties agreed to continue strengthening international cooperation in defending historical memory and justice.
