MINSK, 6 April (BelTA) – Prospects of cooperation in various areas were sketched out as Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova met with the speaker of Turkmenistan’s unicameral parliament (the Mejlis) Dunyagozel Gulmanova, the press service of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament told BelTA.
Natalya Kochanova stressed that for Belarus Turkmenistan is a friendly country and friendly relations based on mutual understanding between the nations have continued for many years. “Cooperation between our countries was established a long time ago. Primarily our leaders should be credited with the accomplishment. Over the years of independence stable political contacts were formed, including visits of Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko to Turkmenistan. The ministries of foreign affairs keep actively interacting on international platforms. Cooperation in absolutely every field is important for us. The countries cooperate in parliamentary affairs, regularly participate in the work of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS IPA) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and are intent on stepping up the dialogue,” the speaker of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament noted. Natalya Kochanova remarked that the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union represents a unique platform for discussing topical items on the international agenda.
Among the matters raised within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union were sovereignty and independence as Belarus’ priorities. The chairwoman of the Council of the Republic expressed gratitude for the support provided on international platforms. “The parliaments should consolidate their efforts,” Natalya Kochanova spoke in favor of continued constructive cooperation.
“The Council of the Republic supports the development of regional cooperation and twinning ties. This year the 12th Forum of Regions [of Belarus and Russia] and the 3rd Belarus-Uzbekistan women’s business forum will take place in [the Russian city of] Nizhny Novgorod,” the head of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament announced a number of events.
The speaker also mentioned another important topic: the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. “We are grateful to the elder generations, who defended freedom and independence of our countries as they stood shoulder to shoulder and fought against Nazi invaders. And we are grateful to you for taking part in our youth projects such as Memory Train and Children of the Commonwealth. Belarus is glad to welcome participants of these initiatives, including children from Turkmenistan, and supports their joining the Memory Train project. It is very important for continuing the traditions established by the elder generations,” Natalya Kochanova emphasized.
“Belarus develops efficiently today. We have good social and economic development indicators. We are ready to cooperate in absolutely all the fields,” the speaker concluded.
Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova is also expected to participate in the anniversary 150th session of the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union today.
