MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) – In accordance with the Agreement for the Application of Safeguards in Connection with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Belarus is hosting regular scheduled inspections of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) told BelTA.

The IAEA inspectors have visited the Belarusian nuclear power plant. On 18 December they will go to the United Energy and Nuclear Research Institute Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB). The inspectors are supposed to physically inventory the nuclear material, check the maintenance of reporting documents as well as the maintenance of IAEA preservation and observation systems at the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

Belarus and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed the Agreement for the Application of Safeguards on 14 April 1995. The Emergencies Ministry represented by its Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department (Gosatomnadzor) is the competent agency of Belarus’ state system in charge of enabling and accompanying IAEA inspections among other things.

The IAEA’s safeguards are an inalienable component of the international security system and represent a complex of technical measures, which are applied with regard to nuclear installations and nuclear material used by states. The IAEA seeks to independently verify the observance of the legal commitment of the state that nuclear facilities are not misused and that nuclear material is not diverted from peaceful uses to the production of nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices. States agree to the application of these measures by concluding a safeguards agreement.
