Belarus’ historical and cultural heritage list includes 5,690 objects

MINSK, 13 November (BelTA) - The list of historical and cultural heritage sites in Belarus currently includes 5,690 objects, Irina Dashchinskaya, Head of the Historical and Cultural Heritage Department at the Culture Ministry, told the media, BelTA has learned.

“The historical and cultural heritage of Belarus is the property of the Belarusian people and an integral part of world culture. Its preservation is one of the fundamental national interests. The State List of Historical and Cultural Heritage Sites of Belarus, which is expanded annually, includes the most significant heritage objects: monuments of archaeology, architecture, urban planning, art history, intangible heritage, customs, traditions, and rites. Today, this list comprises 5,690 historical and cultural heritage sites,” Irina Dashchinskaya said.

According to her, to promote historical and cultural heritage, the Culture Ministry launched a search website in 2020 where any user can find information about historical and cultural heritage objects.

“Over the past three decades, Belarus has been actively engaged in the restoration of its architectural heritage. Significant resources have been invested in its maintenance and preservation. Extensive work has been carried out to restore and renovate hundreds of sites to ensure they remain in proper technical condition. At the state level, these tasks are addressed through a series of state programs and local investment projects. The landmark sites include the Bolshoi Theater, the Kupala Theater in Minsk, Holy Intercession Monastery in Tolochin, the Belarusfilm building, Kalozha Church in Grodno, Dinamo Stadium in Minsk, Brest Fortress, Minsk Hero City obelisk, the building of the former Spassky St Savior Monastery in Kobrin, Corpus Christi Church in Nesvizh, the Palace and Park Complex in Zhilichi, Savior Transfiguration Church in Polotsk, and others,” Irina Dashchinskaya added.

She noted that the preservation of the country's historical and cultural heritage has been largely possible thanks to the Belarusian President’s Fund for the Support of Culture and Art. Since 2017, it has earmarked funds for the conservation and restoration of ruins of the castle in Krevo, the conservation with partial restoration of the ruins of the former Sapieha Castle in Golshany, the restoration of the Puslovsky (also spelled as Puslowski) palace, repair and restoration of the chapel in Drogichin District, and the repair of the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos in the village of Muravanka in Shchuchin District.
"In 2025, in accordance with the president's directive, the fund allocated Br6 million. Of them Br1 million was spent on the restoration of the iconostasis of the Dormition Cathedral at the Zhirovichi Men's Monastery and Br5 million – on the reconstruction of the second phase of the National Art Museum,” she said.

Furthermore, large-scale work continues on the castles in Krevo, Novogrudok, and Golshany, the palaces in Pruzhany and Zhilichi, the buildings of the National Art Museum, the Belarusian State Academy of Music, and other heritage sites.
