Belarus’ customs: Decision to relocate Lithuanian trucks away from border aims to ensure safety, security

OSHMYANY DISTRICT, 10 November (BelTA) - The decision to move Lithuanian trucks to designated areas aims to eliminate unsafe conditions on the access roads to the Šalčininka and Medininkai checkpoints closed by the Lithuanian side, Viktor Zubik, the head of the Customs Control Directorate at the State Customs Committee of Belarus, told journalists.

“More than 1,100 Lithuanian-registered trucks, which were queuing along the roads for Lithuania to open the border, are now being relocated to specially equipped areas. These measures aim to eliminate unsafe conditions on the access roads to the Šalčininkai and Medininkai checkpoints closed by the Lithuanian side,” Viktor Zubik said.

He added that the vehicles are being parked in parking areas near the Benyakoni, Kamenny Log, Kotlovka and Brestovitsa border checkpoints.

Starting 9.00 on 10 November, the movement of Lithuanian trucks has been suspended in both directions across the Belarusian-Lithuanian border. “If Lithuania continues its unfriendly actions, the Belarusian side reserves the right to take measures against these vehicles as provided for by law,” Viktor Zubik noted, adding that the trucks will be able to leave the parking areas only after the Lithuanian side resumes traffic across the Belarusian-Lithuanian border section.

According to Viktor Zubik, work has been organized to escort the convoys to the designated parking areas: “Joint teams, which include a representative from the customs service and a representative from the State Traffic Inspectorate, are servicing notices to drivers to relocate their vehicles to the specified locations. The queue is being processed, drivers are being identified, notices are being served to them, and once a convoy is formed, it is escorted to the designated parking area."

“Some drivers are absent from their vehicles, which complicates the work of relocating these vehicles to the designated parking areas. Time is required to locate them, ensure their arrival at the vehicle, serve the official notices, and proceed with further procedures,” Viktor Zubik added.
