Belarus, Cuba seek to step up military cooperation

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) – Belarus has invited Cuba to boost military cooperation, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Defense told BelTA.

Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin held negotiations with Chief of the General Staff - First Deputy Minister of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces Roberto Legra Sotolongo, who is paying an official visit to Belarus.

“My visit to Cuba resulted in an interagency military cooperation agreement and the establishment of a structured framework for interaction that have created a foundation for deeper and broader bilateral engagement. At present the most promising avenues of cooperation include: air force and air defense, communications, military medicine, electronic warfare, and engineering support. Bilateral events held over the last two years have confirmed the value of exchanging expertise and the importance of adopting best practices. I suggest we should boost bilateral military cooperation. We are keen to help Cuba to create the new modern Revolutionary Armed Forces,” Viktor Khrenin emphasized.

Roberto Legra Sotolongo confirmed the interest in cooperation in the mentioned areas. “Mutual visits of military delegations have indeed rebooted the relations and have opened up new prospects for cooperation between the armed forces of Belarus and Cuba. We are also satisfied with the high level of relations between our countries,” he said.

The parties noted similar approaches to topical problems of international security and stressed the importance of deepening military cooperation.

Apart from that, Roberto LegraSotolongo has held negotiations with Chief of the General Staff, First Deputy Defense Minister of Belarus Pavel Muraveiko. The parties discussed the current state of bilateral military cooperation and reached agreements on advancing interaction in matters of mutual interest.
